Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions we get asked in the clinic

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Generally NO. We are looking for a mild dull achy heavy feeling rather than a sharp feeling. Different points do feel different depending where on the body the pins are placed.

Is Acupuncture safe for everybody including children?

Yes Acupuncture is completely safe for everyone. As a general rule you DO NOT needle over broken or damaged skin. It is also safe for children. During my studies in China a saw new born babies as young as 3 months old needled regularly. We can preform Acupuncture without needles even. Discuss this with your practitioner during your Initial Exam.

My physio/chiro does dry needling, is there a difference?

Yes, dry needling is not Acupuncture. Acupuncture is based on thousands of years of study and practice and used the principles of Chinese Medicine. Dry needling is putting needles where a patient has pain. This is generally NOT done in traditional Acupuncture treatment.

Am I covered by health funds?

We are covered by all health funds, if you have coverage for Acupuncture, you will be covered. Call your health fund to find out.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your condition, the state of your nervous system, and how many years you have been dealing with it. Pain will generally respond immediately to Acupuncture, and we will know after the first 3 treatments what your personal care plan will look like

What happens in the Initial Exam?

This is taking a full case history, going through a patients CT/MRI/Xray or blood work ect... We will then be able to advise the best course of treatment for you. If we do not think we can help you, we DO NOT charge you. The Initial Exam DOES NOT include treatment.

How long does each session take?

Always allow 1 hour. It can take longer or less time depending on how long we need to speak about your case. You will generally rest for 20-30 minutes once the needles have been applied.

Are the needles clean?

Yes! All the needles are sterile and single use only.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No you do not need a referral. You can book and Initial Exam online or by calling the reception

What should I wear?

Ideally you wear loose fitting clothing We need to access from the elbows down and knees down so loose garments are ideal.
